So, correct me if I'm wrong, but fear eats the soul. Never mind Fassbinder, or even whether you believe in souls.
Bottom line: Fear is a contemptuous piece of shit of an emotion that paralyses the mind, clouds good judgement, and cripples a sense of being able to commit to an action based on knowing right from wrong.
But fear is so all-powerful on occasion, that over time it turns into something insidious. For example:
- obsessive-compulsive behaviour
- anger
- bullying
- denial
- attack
- self-contempt.
So, to paraphrase Frankie Goes to Hollywood's line, FEAR, what is it good for?
Well, beyond an evolutionary sense of fight or flight, NOTHING.
Fear is complementary to stress. Fear is something we're educated to live and breathe.
Fear, indeed, DOES eat the soul.
PS - I don't believe in souls, past lives, manifest guilt or anything else that excuses shitty behaviour.
